  • what the cavern provided in scenic repose, it lacked in warm cheese dips and many other amenities which the modern man has been found partial to. even the greatest explorers require basic amenities. at dawn we moved onward, our spirits lofted as if upon the wings of the bats with which we slept the night prior, leathery little air mice that they are
  • if you like to battle rats you may like this cave. my dear compadre Young Eli here is one of the top rat-battlers in the greater Methow area; though he rarely harms them or sends them to meet their makers, for they are nimble-bobs and have earned the right to lord over this domain and its spectacular views. indeed in deed we mostly rest our tired bodies in harmony with the cave creatures and the element of battle is symbolic, if not exactly symbiotic. there, two words with many similar letters to end a story of small meanings, I do hope you find what you are looking for today

  • Blake and I met in a one room school house in North Cascades National Park, about fifteen miles down valley from where this photo was taken. We were twelve. We got permission to bring our fly rods to school, sneaking off to fish rainbow creek during recess and forming a mutually beneficial alliance during “bike wars” that summer. It took us twenty years of mucking around and four days of walking to finally make it up here to climb together. It was a circuitous but rather enjoyable approach.

  • This weekend Canyon and I had the rather silly experience of running our first hundred mile race together. Complete with not dying and everything. It was not as pleasant of a time as I had hoped, but then, I had hoped for a rather pleasant time. For I am a true fool’s fool. This crap photo was taken around hour two of twenty two point five, and is titled “bluebells and the imminent death of pleasantries and all other things pleasant.” What followed was a theatre of the absurd, starring a hundred zombies, two thousand boiled potatoes, and a can of cheese whiz named Waldo. Honestly, whatever. I don’t know if the can of cheese whiz had a name, or how to explain the rest of it. Running 100 miles is weird. We both finished in under 24 hours. The good thing is Canyon is hopping around like a spring ninja-chicken today, and I am no longer hobbling along like a demon zombie penguin mumble-yelling at my patient pacer “let’s run!” as he looks at me quizzically and tries to explain that my walking pace is actually faster than my arm windmilling demon penguin pace that I am calling “running”. Thanks heaps to @semi_rad for the bear claws, pacing, and putting up with the darkest hours of demon penguin. Thanks @canyonwoodward for being the best running pardner a demon penguin could ask for - and for quoting pretty much the entirety of Tolkien, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid and Braveheart to keep spirits high - and to everyone who sent encouraging messages affirming that we are idiots, put up with us scampering off on training runs these past months, let us eat all their ice cream, or generally didn’t tell us it was impossible or the worst idea ever.
  • I have been known on occasion to: run out of gas, break nice things, catch a flight to the wrong country, and fail for weeks on end to effectively engage in screen based communications. I deeply admire and often try to take notes from my friend Brendan (@semi_rad) who doesn’t do any of these things. Last week while driving down a desolate stretch of highway with the nearest gas station sixty miles out and the gas light flickering, I turned to Brendan and said “hey, do you want to drive now?” It was a sincere offer. I figured based on his current trajectory he might never accidentally fly to the wrong country but at least I could offer him the once in a lifetime (for him - not me) thrill of holding the wheel while driving on empty - perhaps even eventually feeling the exhilaration of spluttering to a stop in the middle of nowhere. He politely declined, but the hour that followed, AC off and windows up, coasting down hills and drafting semis, led to some good chuckles, back sweat puddles, and perspective stretching conversation. He wrote a blog about it. If you try hard or are good at internet you will find and read what he wrote. If you are like me and bad at internet and concentration you will probably click his name @semi_rad and immediately forget why you did, but enjoy the laughs and insights on his feed and perhaps someday make it to his blog.
